Information Injury Prevention Safe Communities Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrians account for approximately one-third of traffic fatalities in DeKalb County. Safe Communities is working to reduce the rate of pedestrian injuries and deaths by focusing on the county as a whole as well as improving some of DeKalb's most dangerous roads like Buford Highway, Glenwood Road, McAfee Road and Flat Shoals/Candler Road.

Buford Highway and Glenwood Road
Safe Communities was instrumental in forming the Buford Highway Stakeholders Group, and Safe Communities is working with residents and business to form a similar group for the Glenwood Road area. The Buford Highway Stakeholders Group initiatives have resulted in concept designs to enhance pedestrian safety along the Buford Highway corridor, particularly in Chamblee and Doraville. Construction of pedestrian safety enhancements are scheduled to begin in 2002.

Pedestrian Safety Task Force
A County-wide Pedestrian Safety Task Force was created in November 2001 to deal with pedestrian safety issues around DeKalb elementary schools. The Task Force consists of members of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, DeKalb County Board of Health, DeKalb County Board of Education, DeKalb County Department of Public Safety and DeKalb County Public Works.

Hispanic Pedestrian Safety Awareness Campaign
Since Hispanics account for 16 percent of all pedestrian fatalities, but comprise only nine percent of DeKalb's population, Safe Communities sponsors a Hispanic Pedestrian Safety Awareness Campaign. As part of our educational efforts, Safe Communities has produced posters and designed billboards with safety awareness messages in Spanish and English.

International Walk Your Children to School Day
Among the many other pedestrian safety programs we have generated is the International Walk Your Children to School Day, which is a yearly event intended to promote exercise, heighten drivers' safety awareness of speed limits and crossings, and help to identify roadways that are unsafe for school children. The most recent event was held on Oct. 2, 2001 and involved nine county schools, 1,500 children, and dozens of parents. We will once again organize this event in the fall of 2002.
