SAFE KIDS of DeKalb and the DeKalb County Board of Health’s Injury Prevention Unit conduct bimonthly car seat classes at the Board of Health’s warehouse facility in Scottdale, GA (near Decatur). The cost of the class is $10 and is open only to DeKalb County residents whose children receive Medicaid, WIC or PeachCare for Kids. Parents the program must show their assistance card at the time of the class. Persons who are privately insured DeKalb County residents will pay the SAFE KIDS of DeKalb direct seat cost. Only one seat per family. Convertible Car Seats $45 (rear facing 5- 30 pounds; forward facing to 40 pounds). Combination Seats $45 (forward facing up to 40 pounds w/ harness and up to 80 pounds as a booster seat). High back booster Seat $25 ( 40- 80 pounds). The classes teach parents, grandparents and care givers how to properly install their child’s car seat and how to identify and correct installation errors. Class participants also learn important information regarding air bags and child passengers, current Georgia law pertaining to child passengers, potential hazards of store- bought aids for installing a car seat, and the dangers of purchasing a secondhand seat. All classes are 10 a.m.- Noon and are held the second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise scheduled. Payment for the class must be in cash or money order. Persons arriving 15 minutes past the start of the class will be rescheduled for the next class. No exceptions. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED By Calling 404-294-3261. Payment is required at the time of the class in the form of cash or money order (payable to SAFE KIDS of DeKalb). Sorry, no personal checks. Only one car seat per participant. Doors to the class close 10 minutes after the start of the class.
