Prevention
The
DeKalb County Injury Prevention Program develops initiatives to
decrease the number of deaths and disabilities associated with
injuries.
Injuries
are not accidental. Injuries are predictable and preventable events
and the are leading cause of death in the United States for people
between the ages of one and 34.
Each
year, more than 136,000 people die in the U.S. as a result of
injuries. Of these, 90,000 die of unintentional injuries (led
by motor vehicle crashes), and 46,000 die of intentional injuries
(suicide accounts for 29,000; homicide for 17,000).
During
an average year in the U.S., unintentional injuries account for
nearly 31 million emergency room visits. In DeKalb County alone,
annual hospital bills related to injuries total $96 million.
In
1998, 5,592 injuries were reported among DeKalb County residents.
Of these, 361 people died as a result of their injuries. Deaths
due to injuries account for 10 percent of all DeKalb's fatalities.
