Settlement Dollars

A portion of Georgia's share of the 1998 Multi-state Tobacco Settlement
Agreement is reaching the streets in DeKalb County. The DeKalb
County Board of Health's Tobacco Use Prevention Unit awarded over
$96,000 to 18 local groups in a third round of Tobacco Action
Grants (TAG) to conduct community-based prevention activities.
All TAG awards aim to reduce tobacco use among people living in
DeKalb County. Twelve of the 18 TAG awards focus on preventing

February 20, 2003
A Tucker man was bitten by a rabid raccoon on Feb. 12, near the
intersection of Gloucester Drive and Cooledge Road. The raccoon
was picked up on Wednesday, Feb.12, and the positive rabies test
result was received Thursday, Feb. 13, according to DeKalb County
Animal Control, who've distributed flyers and made automated calls

Doraville resident who died on September 9, 2002 has been established
as a probable case of West Nile virus infection. The patient's
blood sample initially tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV)
at a private laboratory and has now tested positive at the Georgia
Public Health Laboratory. The sample has been sent to the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for final confirmation.

for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 11 percent of youth
are overweight in the United States. The CDC reports poor nutrition
and lack of physical activity as likely culprits with nearly half
of youth ages 12 -21 not vigorously active on a regular basis
and only 18 percent of youth 6-17 eating the recommended servings

Although the number of reported AIDS cases in the U.S. is decreasing,
the trend in DeKalb County is just the opposite. The number of
DeKalb residents known to be HIV-positive or to have AIDS is actually
increasing.
