DeKalb County Board of Health celebrates volunteerism

The DeKalb County Board of Health recently held its 21st annual volunteer recognition to thank the agency's more than 300 volunteers. The event's theme was "Volunteers: Always caring, always sharing."

Two special awards were presented. The Dr. Gunar N. Bohan Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service went to Faye Lyons-Gary, chair of the Prevention Alliance for Tobacco Control and Health's Secondhand Smoke Committee. Ms. Lyons-Gary led the successful effort to pass a revised DeKalb County Clean Indoor Air Ordinance making most worksites and public places 100 percent smoke-free. Carol Duggan, a Kirkwood Health Center social services technician housed at the William T. White Family Resource Center, received the Staff Award for Exemplary Work with Volunteers. She recruits and manages volunteers who assist with school-related activities, community events and health center projects.

The Board of Health's volunteers contribute to a healthier DeKalb by working with community groups, assisting in health centers and staffing special events.
