HOT TUB, SPA AND WHIRLPOOL SAFETY
Hot tubs, spas and whirlpools are a popular and fun way to relax at the end of a long day. Environmental Health at the DeKalb County Board of Health offers some safety tips for hot tub users:
- Check the level of chlorine or bromine often. Add more if the level of disinfectant
is low. Make sure that the water pH is at a safe level.
- Know where the shut-off switch to the pump is so you can turn it off in case of an
emergency.
- Water temperature should be kept below 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Make sure the drains on your hot tub meet current safety standards. Never operate
a hot tub with cracked or damaged drains.
- Always shower before entering a hot tub. People who have skin infections or
rashes or who are ill should not use the hot tub.
- Avoid alcohol when using a hot tub. Alcohol use could lead to drowning.
- Do not allow children to play in or around a hot tub. Children should only use a
hot tub under the supervision of a responsible adult. A locked safety cover
should be used when no one is in the hot tub.
