Behind
the Scenes
Every
day thousands of people eat in one of DeKalb County's 1,800 food
services establishments. It is the responsibility of the DeKalb
County Board of Health's Food Protection staff to ensure that
the public's dining experience is always a safe one.
The
16-member staff of the Food Protection Program, part of the Division
of Environmental Health, issues permits for new restaurants, inspects
each of DeKalb's restaurants at least twice a year, provides food
safety education and fosters a safety-conscious restaurant-going
public.
"We
inspect almost every restaurant in the county at least twice a
year, and post the scores and violations in the restaurant,"
explained Janice Buchanon, Food Protection Program manager. "But
the best way for people to know how to spot an unsafe restaurant
is to learn to see the restaurant through the eyes of a health
inspector."
