DECATUR, Ga. – Men live with the everyday worries of helping to provide for the security and safety of their loved ones, while suffering silently with debilitating diseases and mental health issues. The DeKalb County Board of Health’s Men’s Health
Initiative is giving men a platform to address these concerns.
On Saturday, Nov. 7, the initiative will host Strong 4 Family, a men’s health and wellness fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center. The center is at 3181 Rainbow Drive in Decatur. While the focus will be men, the event is for the entire family. It will have something for everyone — from a kids’ zone to conversations about keeping the community safe. Of course, there also will be free health screenings, entertainment, prizes and fun.
Strong 4 Family will address all aspects of men’s wellness, including chronic disease, mental health, economic development and public safety. The day will feature remarks by radiation oncologist Dr. Eric Randolph and alcohol and drug counselor Dr. Clarence Massie. Roland Washington, managing partner of All People Up, will moderate a public safety panel that will include Recorders Court Judge Roderick Bridges, Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice Assessment and Classification Specialist Will Clark, Freedom is a Choice founder Omar Howard, DeKalb Police Major K.D. Johnson and DeKalb County Sheriff Jeff Mann.
“I am excited about the spotlight on men’s health in DeKalb County,” said District Health Director S. Elizabeth Ford, M.D., M.B.A. “It shows our commitment to the health of every resident of DeKalb County. We want the men of our county to be both community leaders and examples for their families and friends around the state and nation.” The Men’s Health Initiative is working to include more men and organizations in the movement toward better health.
